Article: The Metals We Choose at Aurora

The Metals We Choose at Aurora

Every design begins with the pearl.

At Aurora, pearls are always the starting point.

Every decision—from the metal we choose to the way a piece is finished—exists to support the pearl’s glow, balance, and individuality.

We don’t believe one material is right for every design.

Instead, we choose the one that best complements the pearl, the piece, and the way it’s meant to be worn.

Our Standards

Every Aurora pearl is chosen for three things above all.

Glow

Not simply brightness, but the kind of light that makes you stop and look again.

Balance

A beautiful piece isn’t made from perfect pearls—it comes from harmony between shape, color, proportion, and movement.

Character

Natural pearls are never identical. We embrace the details that give each one its own personality.

The Materials We Use

Sterling Silver (S925)

Most Aurora pieces begin with solid sterling silver.

We choose it because it offers:

  • Strength for everyday wear
  • A refined weight and feel
  • Excellent comfort for sensitive skin
  • A timeless foundation that lets the pearl remain the focus

Even our gold-toned designs are built on sterling silver—never brass or base metal.

S925 with 18K Gold Plating

Many Aurora designs are finished with 18K gold plating over sterling silver.

We choose this finish because it offers:

  • A luminous, elegant gold tone
  • Beautiful harmony with natural pearls
  • A refined finish that feels light and modern

As with all gold-plated jewelry, the finish will naturally soften over time with wear. Beneath it remains solid sterling silver, preserving the quality of the piece.

U.S. 14K Gold-Filled

For selected designs, Aurora uses 14K gold-filled components sourced from the United States.

Gold-filled contains a much thicker layer of gold than standard plating, making it an excellent choice for frequent wear.

It offers:

  • Longer-lasting color
  • Greater durability
  • A warm gold tone that develops naturally over time

Like all precious metals, subtle changes in tone may occur depending on skin chemistry, environment, and daily wear. With proper care, gold-filled jewelry can remain beautiful for many years.

An Honest Approach to Materials

No jewelry material stays exactly the same forever.

Rather than promising otherwise, we believe in choosing quality materials, setting honest expectations, and creating pieces meant to be worn and enjoyed.

With thoughtful care, Aurora’s gold-plated pieces are designed to retain their beauty for one to two years or longer, depending on individual wear.

We believe confidence comes from understanding—not unrealistic promises.

Why We Don’t Default to Solid Gold

Aurora is intentionally pearl-led.

For most designs, sterling silver, gold-plated silver, and gold-filled offer the best balance of:

  • Beauty
  • Comfort
  • Durability
  • Accessibility

These materials allow the pearl—not the setting—to remain the heart of every piece.

Custom Solid Gold & Platinum

For those looking for heirloom pieces, custom options are always available.

We offer:

  • 14K Solid Gold
  • 18K Solid Gold
  • Platinum

Each piece is made to order and individually quoted.

If you’re interested in a custom version of an Aurora design, we’d be happy to guide you through the process before purchase.

Our Philosophy

We don’t believe jewelry should sit in a box.

We believe it should become part of your everyday.

We choose materials that age honestly, wear beautifully, and allow the pearl to remain the soul of every piece.

Because at Aurora, every design begins with the pearl.
