How to Care for Fine Pearls Without Overthinking It
Pearls have a reputation for being delicate, and while they do need a little extra care, I don’t think that should stop you from wearing them regularly.
I love pearls with everyday outfits, and I believe beautiful jewelry should be enjoyed, not kept away for special occasions. The good news is that caring for pearls is actually quite simple. A few small habits can help keep them looking beautiful for years.
Last On, First Off
This is probably the easiest rule to remember. Put your pearls on after skincare, makeup, and perfume, and take them off before showering, swimming, or exercising.
Pearls are sensitive to chemicals, excessive moisture, and friction, so keeping them away from these things can make a real difference.
A Little Care After Wearing
I recommend gently wiping your pearls with a clean, soft cloth after wearing them. This helps remove skin oils, perspiration, and any residue from everyday products.
If they need a little more cleaning, use a slightly damp, soft cloth and let them dry completely before storing. Avoid soaking pearl jewelry, especially necklaces or bracelets that are strung on thread.
You don’t need special polishing products or frequent deep cleaning. In fact, ultrasonic cleaners, abrasive products, and harsh chemicals should always be avoided.
Caring for Pearls and Metals
If your jewelry combines pearls with sterling silver or gold-plated metal, remember that they need slightly different care.
Silver polishing cloths can be useful for suitable silver surfaces, but they shouldn’t be used directly on pearls, as some contain polishing compounds.
For pearls, a simple soft cloth is usually all you need.
Storing Your Pearls
I like to keep pearls in a soft pouch or fabric-lined jewelry box, away from harder jewelry that might scratch them.
Avoid direct sunlight, excessive heat, and extreme dryness or humidity. For strung pearl necklaces, laying them flat can also help protect the thread.
It’s also worth checking clasps and stringing occasionally, especially for pieces you wear often.
Enjoy Wearing Them
I don’t think pearls need to be treated as something too precious to touch. They’re softer than many gemstones, so a little care is important, but that doesn’t mean you need to worry about every little thing.
When I choose pearls for Aurora, I want them to become pieces you’ll genuinely enjoy wearing.
Take good care of them, but most importantly, enjoy them. That’s what they’re here for.
