Aurora Selection Philosophy

If you ask me what I notice first when choosing a pearl, my answer is almost always the same: luster.

Of course, I look at the shape, color, and surface quality too. They all matter. But beautiful luster is usually what makes me stop and take a closer look.

I especially love pearls that seem to have a little movement in their glow. Some have a soft, silky shine, while others are brighter and almost metallic. And sometimes, when you turn a pearl slightly, you’ll notice a hint of blue, pink, or violet that wasn’t obvious at first.

That’s one of my favorite things about pearls. They can look a little different depending on the light. I often find myself looking at the same pearl by a window, outside in natural light, and again in softer indoor lighting. It’s interesting how much you can notice just by changing the light around it.

When I’m selecting pearls for Aurora, I spend a lot of time looking at these little details. I pay attention to how evenly the light moves across the surface, whether the color feels balanced, and how the shape works with the overall appearance.

Sometimes I’ll find a pearl with incredible luster but a shape that doesn’t quite work for the design I have in mind. Other times, I’ll come across something that looks fairly simple at first, but the more I look at it, the more I appreciate it.

I also spend a lot of time matching pearls, especially for earrings. Finding two that look beautiful together isn’t always easy. Even when they’re similar in size and color, the luster or shape can feel slightly different. I usually keep comparing until I find a pair that feels balanced.

Not every pearl I look at makes it into Aurora, and I’m comfortable with that. I’d rather take my time than choose something I’m not completely happy with.

I think what I enjoy most about selecting pearls is that there’s always something new to discover. Even after looking at thousands of them, I still come across colors, shapes, and combinations that surprise me.

And when I find something I really love, I want you to be able to see what I see. That’s why I spend so much time photographing pearls in natural light and showing how they look from different angles. I know photos can never capture everything, but I want you to have a good sense of what makes each one special.

At the end of the day, I want every pearl I choose for Aurora to be something I’d be happy to wear myself. Something beautiful, thoughtfully selected, and easy to enjoy for years.

That’s really what guides me when I’m choosing pearls.
